| Report: Arnborg Winter F3J 2005 | |
by Erik Dahl Christensen

More than 30 rc pilots from Denmark, Norway and Germany met in Arnborg during the last weekend in February to participate in the season's first soaring contest in Denmark in 2005. Are we crazy? ... Maybe, but we had a nice weekend right in between two snow storms.
We used electrical winches to launch the planes, but everything else was according to the official F3J rules. Most of the competitors were familiar faces, but 3 danish newcomers showed up: Klaus, Kasper and Jørgen. It was nice to see you and we hope you will be back for more F3J.
Most of the pilots arrived at Arnborg on friday afternoon and flew some practice flights. But the norwegians already came on thursday. Aril Røsvik had travelled all the way from Tromsø in the northern part of Norway.
After breakfast saturday morning, we gathered on the flying field to set up the equipment. Allan Feld (contest director) and Jo Grini (norwegian pilot) informed us about the event and timing equipment (supplied by Jo Grini - thanks!). Just after 10 am, we started flying. There was a calm sidewind, but this wasn't a problem. We had lots of space between the winches. Some pilots even catched a thermal or two in the rather cold but sunny weather. During the afternoon the wind increased and with temperatures just below zero, our fingers and ears were getting cold. The day ended with a little snow.
Saturday evening we all gathered together for dinner and for the prize giving. Erik Morgan Villadsen (Norway) won the competition day 1, ahead of Jesper Jensen (Denmark) and Jo Grini (Norway).
Sunday morning it had become a lot colder. And combined with strong wind it proved to be a real challenge to keep warm. But with the proper clothing it worked out fine. It was difficult to fly the full 10 minutes, but now and then a thermal occured like some sort of miracle.
After lunch on sunday we flew one more round and then quickly packed all our gear together. The winner of the competition day 2 was Michael Kröger (Germany) ahead of Henrik Nielsen (Denmark) and Dirk Mohr (Germany). The winners of each day recieved trophys and the top 5 pilots got a bottle of wine. Parachutes from Samba Model were sponsored to 2.-4. place, cyano for 5. place and an epoxy-kit for the last place. The cyano and epoxy were sponsored by Electric Flight Equipment along with a Zoom Zoom 4D that was given to the pilot who flew the longest flight during the weekend. This was accomplished by Jo Grini who flew 9:52,1. Hammel Serigrafi supplied all competitors with nice T-shirts and hats.
Thanks to: all the sponsors, Allan and Lars for running the event, and to everyone else who helped.
We hope to see you again next year in Arnborg.
Peter Mikkelsen and Erik Dahl Christensen
